AUDITION INFORMATION

The Strand Theatre announces auditions for its summer production, The SpongeBob Musical.

Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!

 

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

 

An exciting new musical featuring irresistible characters and magical music, this deep-sea pearl of a show is set to make a splash with audiences young and old. The future is bright, the future is bold, the future is The SpongeBob Musical.

The SpongeBob Musical will run July 26 and 27 at 7:00pm and July 28 at 2:00pm. Shelby Garrett will direct, Justin Jones will serve as music director, Anna Harsh will choreograph, and Meta Lasch will serve as technical director.

 

Auditions are Tuesday, May 28, at 6:00pm at the Strand. Please prepare 16-32 bars of a song from either a musical or an upbeat pop song. An accompanist will be provided. Auditions will also consist of cold reads from the script as well a dance combo, so wear comfortable shoes you can move in. If necessary, callbacks will take place on Wednesday, May 30, at 6:00pm. Audition ages are high school students through adults. Auditionees are encouraged to listen to Nickelodeon’s The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! cast recording for inspiration.

 

Rehearsals will begin the week of June 10, and run Monday-Thursday evenings for approximately two to three hours per rehearsal. Character Breakdown

SpongeBob SquarePants (Range: C3-B4) He is optimistic, innocent, and boyish; energetic and sometimes hyperactive. This actor should have the ability to move well and be an extremely physical actor, naturally funny and have great comedic skills and precision. Strong pop tenor and great actor.

Eugene Krabs (Range: B2-Bb4) The greedy owner of the Krusty Krab and employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. While everyone is off panicking about Bikini Bottom's imminent doom, he decides to strike the iron while it's hot and puts on a huge "apocalypse sale" at his restaurant, exploiting the fear of his fellow fish to make him even richer. Strong singer, actor, and mover.

 

Patrick Star (Range: Bb2-Bb4) Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless, a big softie who can also be prone to sudden child-like fits of rage or frustration.

 

Sandy Cheeks (Range: A3-E5) A brainy and athletic Texan squirrel who came to Bikini Bottom for a research project. She acts as SpongeBob's most trusted ally on their quest to stop the volcano from erupting, using her vast amount of scientific knowledge and brilliant inventions to aid the mission. Strong actress, singer, and mover.

 

Sheldon J. Plankton (Range: B2-G#4) His personality outweighs his size; he is slick, scheming, nefarious; has the ability to charm, is determined and will do anything to get ahead in life; very greedy, but his heart is still open enough to rekindle a romance with his wife. This character must sing, dance and rap.

 

Squidward Q. Tentacles (Range: A2-F#4) Grumpy, cynical, dry, short-tempered, generally negative but lovable. This actor must sing and TAP dance.

 

Karen the Computer (Range: G#3-F#5) Glamorous, a robotic housewife of Plankton. She's been there for Plankton's every scheme and plot and has become jaded because she's “been there and done that.” Strong comedic actress, singing, and mover.

 

Pearl Krabs (Range:Bb3-F#5) Mr. Krabs' bratty teenage daughter. Actress and very strong singer with gospel and high belt range abilities.

 

Patchy the Pirate (Range: D3-F4/F5 falsetto) Misunderstood pirate from the painting. Singer and actor.

 

Perch Perkins (Range: E2-E4) News reporter. Singer and actor.

 

The Mayor of Bikini Bottom (Range: F#4-B5) Typical Politician. Singer and actor.

 

The Electric Skates Rock and roll band members, the Skates are hardcore rockers. Very comfortable on skateboards, rollerblades, etc. (ability to do tricks a plus).

 

The French Narrator Actor for voiceover portions.

 

The Conductor Actor who hands off and receives a whole slew of props

 

The Foley Artist Fish Actor that produces all sound effects specified in the script and score using percussion instruments, triggered digital effects, and other creative sound makers.

Gary Actor, a puppet, can be voiced by actor playing Larry
